Celebrating the Career of John Tate: A Legacy of Dedication and Leadership

Yesterday, we celebrated the remarkable career of John Tate, who is retiring after nearly 46 years with the company. To most, he is a mentor, leader, and friend—someone whose dedication and hard work have helped shape AHW into what it is today. To me, he is also my dad, and watching him reach this milestone fills me with immense pride and gratitude.

A Journey Rooted in Hard Work

John’s journey began in June of 1979 at Radke & Coffey Implement, where, as a 17-year-old, he initially joined to lend a hand to his brother-in-law. But what he brought to the role was more than just youthful energy—he carried a work ethic that quickly set him apart. Within just two years, he became the parts manager, a testament to his drive and dedication. From there, his career took him to Allerton Implement in Danville, where he served as assistant parts manager, allowing him to further develop his expertise while staying closer to home as his family grew.

When Arends Bros. acquired Allerton Implement, John transitioned to their Urbana location in 1999, a move that would define the rest of his career. Over the years, he took on multiple roles—assistant parts manager, Turf service manager, store manager, and most recently, technical communicator at the AHW Solution Center. Through decades of change, from manual record-keeping to the advanced technology we rely on today, John not only adapted—he thrived. His commitment to ensuring his teams were always set up for success has left a lasting impact on AHW.

More Than Just a Career

Beyond his professional achievements, what truly sets John apart is the person he is. His philosophy has always been simple yet powerful: If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right. With a steel-trap mind, a competitive spirit, and a deep compassion for those around him, he has led by example every step of the way.

But for all of his career accomplishments, John’s greatest pride has always been his family. The youngest of 10 siblings, he shares the same deep-rooted work ethic that runs through their family. Throughout his career, he balanced his professional life with being a devoted husband, father, and now grandfather. His ability to lead with both strength and kindness has left an indelible mark—not only on AHW but on all who have had the privilege of working alongside him.

Looking Ahead to Retirement

As John steps into retirement, his goals are simple: to be the best husband, dad, and grandfather he can be, and to spend his time tinkering with the projects and machines that have always brought him joy. His advice to those still climbing the ladder is as timeless as it is practical: Work hard. Show up on time. Ask questions. Be a good person.

When reflecting on his decades of service, John sums it up best: “I’ve worked with some amazing people over the years. You spend so much time at work—you’d better make it fun.”

John, thank you for everything you’ve done for AHW, for Urbana, and for everyone who has had the privilege of working with you. Congratulations on your well-earned retirement, Dad. The best is yet to come!
